8th edition of the Winter School on Network Optimization (first announcement)

The 8th edition of the Winter School on Network Optimization will take place at Hotel Estoril-Éden, Monte Estoril, from the 15th to the 19th of January 2018. Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to get together and attend high level courses in the field of Network Optimization. Non-PhD students are welcome to attend the school, but the number of participants is limited and priority will be given to PhD students. In this edition of the school, the lecturers and subjects to be addressed are: Adam Ouorou (Orange Labs) - Robust optimization in telecommunications; Martine Labbé (Univ. Libre de Bruxelles) - Bilevel programming: Stackelberg games and Pricing Problems; Ivana Ljubic (ESSEC, Paris) - Recent Developments on Exact Solvers for the (Prize-Collecting) Steiner Tree Problem; Silvano Martello (Univ. of Bologna) - Packing problems in one and more dimensions; Juan José Salazar-Gonzalez (Univ. de La Laguna) - Models and Algorithms for Vehicle Routing Problems with Pickups and Deliveries. The school is part of the activities of the CMAFCIO (Centro de Matemática, Aplicações Fundamentais e Investigação Operacional) University of Lisbon as well as of the ENOG (European Network Optimization Group). The event is also endorsed by the EURO (the Association of European Societies) and APDIO (the Portuguese OR society). Open Faculty Position in Operations Research at ESSEC

*ESSEC Business School is offering a position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Operations Research for its Paris-Cergy campus, to start in September 2019*. Applicants should have a strong research focus and interests in Mathematical Programming and Discrete Optimization, with a PhD or doctorate in related fields. They should also demonstrate high leadership and autonomy in research and teaching, with publications in high-quality journals in Operations Research. Salary is competitive with the European Business Schools environment. The Professor will join the Information Systems, Decision Sciences and Statistics (IDS) department, and will be part of the OMOR (Operations Management / Operations Research) research cluster of ESSEC Business School that currently gathers 9 permanent members and 10 PhD students (see website /_operations-management-research.essec.edu_/). For example, consider the use of convex relaxations to obtain near-optimal alternating current optimal power flow (ACOPF) solutions, or for gas distribution network problems; the use of multi-level optimization to address commodity pricing problems, integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into electricity markets, or to immunize a commodity network against potential attacks; the use of uncertainty optimization techniques to address challenges related to the use of RES, immunize commodity networks against catastrophic events, and obtain robust equilibrium commodity prices that take into account uncertainty in commodity production or demand; the development of improved mathematical formulations and optimization solution methods, to address large-scale Energy related problems; among many other interesting research directions that are being explored towards the goal of designing commodity networks that are “smart”, interconnected, efficient, reliable, resilient, and environmentally responsible.
