The LGI2A, Laboratory of Computer Science and Control Systems of University of Artois (Bethune, North of France) is seeking to fill a PhD position in Operations Research.

The PhD position will be co-funded by the University of Artois, French Ministry of Science and/or the Nord-Pas de Calais region (France) under the title of:

Service Network Design in Supply Chain Systems”

to be supervised by Prof. Gilles Goncalves and Assoc. Prof. Shahin Gelareh at LGI2A.

The PhD is expected to start on October 2013.


Successful candidate will perform research on models of routing and location and develop mathematical models and efficient solution methods for real-life industrial applications.

The position is for 36 months and a net salary of “approximately” 1450 euro per month. As the position is co-funded by the university there might be some minor teaching involved.

The research will be carried out in the group of “Systems Optimization” of LGI2A led by Prof. Gilles Goncalves.

LGI2A (www.lgi2a.univ-artois.fr/) offers a strong scientific support, a friendly environment and collaborative international environment. Several international/EU industrial/research projects at LGI2A permit student to be in the middle of research collaboration and help them to extend their networks to their counterparts at other universities and other academic institutes and industries and invest in developing future career. Several meetings and plenary seminars will offer opportunity to students and researchers to communicate and benefit from the other’s latest research results.

Bethune is located at the North of France (40 minutes North of Lille) in a very calm and quiet North-Western European city. It will take 1 hour to Brussels, 2 hour from London and 70 minutes to Paris by TGV trains.

Candidates must hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics or a related area and should have a very good knowledge of mixed integer programming, decomposition methods, metaheuristics, and algorithms. Other skills such as knowledge in probability theory as well as programming skills are beneficial.

Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are mandatory. Knowledge of French is not required, but successful candidates will be encouraged to learn some basics.
