IWUOR2019 in Nanzan University

Dear EWGLA members, As announced at EWGLA conference in Edinburgh, International Workshop on Urban Operations Research (IWUOR2019) will be held from July 19 to 21 in 2019. The conference place is Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan. The WEB site is opened and the details will be added soon. The URL of the WEB site is http://www.ss.nanzan-u.ac.jp/uor/iwuor2019/ The domestic version of the workshop has been held every year and the main point of the workshop is to promote young researchers. IWUOR2019 preserves the point. Presentations of the preliminary results of ongoing research of graduate students or young researchers are welcomed. We are also planning to have several networking. You will have a good experience in Nagoya. Supply chain complexity track - MIM 2019 [Call for contributions]

***************************** Dear colleagues and friends, Mozart Menezes (Kedge Business School) and I, Diego Ruiz-Hernandez, are organising a track at MIM 2019 (9th IFAC/IFIP/IFORS/IISE/INFORMS Conference on Manufacturing Modelling, Management and Control) to be held in Berlin on 28-30 of August, 2019. The focus is on the holistic understanding of the link between supply chain decisions and financial performance. Companies struggle to improve their financial indicators in highly competitive environments, and encourage the organisation to use the proliferation of products, markets, and channels, as a mechanism for capturing additional revenue for sustaining growth. This proliferation, to which we refer to as /structural complexity/, is likely to bring increases in revenues but those increases are hardly reflected in the operating profits. Although structural complexity seems to be a very big issue in managing todays’ business (a simple Google search for '“supply chain complexity”' or “operational complexity” brings over 250,000 results) and preliminary empirical results suggest that companies may lose up to 10 percent points (or more) of operating profits due to complexity, there is not an organised space for researchers working on this cross-functional areas topic, to exchange ideas. This track wants to fill that void. The track aims at bringing together papers (interdisciplinary work is highly encouraged) that address supply chain complexity from many angles. We accept quantitative and qualitative papers on the subject with an empirical view or theoretically leaning approaches. Papers that discuss performance loss (operation or financial) due to multiplicity of products, markets, and channels, are welcomed. That includes, but is not limited to, loss of forecasting accuracy due to (broadly defined) supply chain complexity, or behavioural experiments that help to shed light on the issue of complexity-induced performance loss in the supply chain. We also encourage the submission of system dynamics and discrete simulation based papers on this subject. Papers of facility location and network design topics that focus on multiple products and markets are also welcome. General facility location or transportation/routing investigations that highlight the issues involved when the numbers of products grow will be of special interest. We would like to use this conference as an opportunity and a platform for organising a group, interested in supply chain complexity issues, for planning beyond this conference. Depending on the answers to this “call of duty”, we will organise a social event for allowing us to get acquainted with each other. We hope you will get on board in this initiative with us. Dear locators, Please find a new EWGLA newsletter, following the meeting in Edinburgh. Note that we have two important calls, for the election of a new member in the EWGLA coordination board and the organization of a EURO winter school. The coordination board ----------------------------------------------------------------- *EWGLA XXIV, Edinburgh, 23-25 May 2018* ----------------------------------------------------------------- The EWGLA XXIV meeting was held in Edinburgh, (perfectly) organised by Sergio Garcia and Jörg Kalcsics. The meeting was attended by 78 persons, coming from 18 countries. - plenary session by Stein Wallace and Andrea Lodi - 53 scientific talks - Four young researchers received grants from EWGLA in order to cover their travel and accomodation expenses. They did a very nice ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Election of the EWGLA coordination board* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During the EWGLA session at EWGLA XXIV, we discussed the activity of our EURO Working Group. The main point was the proposal for changing the rules of the coordination board. Here are the rules that were adopted: /1.The board consists of three members from three different countries.// //2.The mandate of a member starts and ends at a EWGLA meeting.// //3.Each member serves for a span of 4 EWGLA meetings, excluding the one she or he came into office.// // That is, the mandate of a member coming into office at a EWGLA meeting will end four meetings later.// //4.Only one member at a time is replaced at every EWGLA meeting./ Following this rule, we started a transition phase, during which the current coordination board will progressively be replaced by three members. - Sergio Garcia left after EWGLA XXIV (Thanks a lot to him for serving the working group for 3 years) - Olivier Péton will leave after EWGLA XXV. - Jörg Kalcsics will leave after the joint ISOLDE 2020 / EWGLA XXVI meeting. Thus, we call for new volunteers to join the coordination board. According to the new rules, only one member can be elected in 2018 and this person cannot come from France nor UK. Candidates are required to send an email to ewgla-board(a)euro-online.org <mailto:ewgla-board@euro-online.org> by *June 25, with their name, affiliation and a bulleted list o**f views and/or ideas about the future of EWGLA*. The list of candidates will be announced short after. If they are several candidates, registered EWGLA members will be asked to vote and the result will be announced in July. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *ORGANISING A EURO WINTER SCHOOL on FACILITY LOCATION* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The last EWI dedicated to facility location was held in Estoril (Portugal) in 2007. This has been a great opportunity for young researchers to get high level courses on facility location, to present their current research and to extend theur professional network. During the last EWGLA session, a large majority of participants agreed that organising a future EWI on facility location would be a great idea. A traditional approach is that participants to the 2007 EURO winter school are supposed to organise the next winter school on the same topic. It would be great to have volunteers in this group. All EWGLA members can also contribute in the new project.
