Support for local and topic-specific meetings to promote location science

Dear Locators, this year we secured a budget from EURO for a new initiative to support and encourage local or topic-specific location meetings. If you wish to organize a scientific meeting or workshop around a specific topic such as competitive location, emergency facility location, stochastic location etc. or a meeting covering a broader range of location topics in your institution, you will be able to request support from EWGLA up to a maximum of €1,000. The meeting should be open to the entire location community, and it must be announced via the EWGLA mailing list and the web site of the organized meeting (upon approval of the support). The procedure for applications and decisions for support is planned as follows: The EWGLA board will announce a call twice a year. Applicants need to submit a brief letter of intention (about one page) to organize a meeting within the next 12 months (exceptionally within 15 months for the very first call). The applications will be evaluated within two weeks after the deadline and the amount of support will be communicated to the applicants. The letter of intention should provide the following details: 1. A brief description of the meeting, including sufficient information about the format (workshop, conference etc.), the organizers, and the target audience. 2. The topic and how it relates to Location Science. 3. A brief motivation on how this meeting will contribute to the advancement of Location Science or how the (local or international) location community will benefit from it. 4. A concrete explanation and reasoning for the kind of support that is asked for from EWGLA (travel expenses for invited external speakers, supporting student participation, etc.). 5. The budget requested from EWGLA and a plan of the estimated budget for the entire meeting. Note that all expenses will have to be justified with receipts and proofs of payment. 6. Mention of other potential supports from local/international societies, organizations (government, NGO), universities or industry. The deadline for the first call of this year is 30 April 2023. As this is the very first call of the initiative, if you are already planning to organize a meeting before 31 July 2024, you are encouraged to submit your application to the EWGLA Board before this deadline. Depending on the number of applications received by the deadline, it will be possible to provide partial or full support (up to a maximum of €1,000) after evaluation. We want to support these events as much as possible, so if you are planning to organize a meeting but cannot finalize all the details for the first deadline, please contact us with all the details you already know. It may not be possible to guarantee support to organizations if an application, even a partial one, is not submitted by 30 April 2023. The deadline of the second call for proposals will be around 30 September 2023. We are pleased to announce that EWGLA is again offering a number of grants to support young researchers and researchers from economically weak countries for attending the meeting. These grants will cover your expenses for registration & accommodation up to a maximum of €750. To apply, you have to be a member of EWGLA and you should send the following documents as a single pdf by e-mail to the EWGLA Board (ewgla-board(a)mail.euro-online.org) - An extended abstract of two full pages, - Your CV, and - A letter of recommendation from your supervisor, if you are a PhD student. Dear colleagues, applications are invited for a 12-month Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Operations Research and Optimisation at the School of Mathematics, The University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Ember Core Ltd (https://www.ember.to) The future of public transport is fully electric and tech-enabled. Ember is a start-up building such a future in Scotland by offering electric bus service on a small number of routes across Scotland. They are now looking to use optimisation algorithms for their vehicle and driver assignment as they scale up their network. In collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Ember has already developed an initial prototype of an algorithm that assigns vehicles to routes. As a next step, we aim to expand the prototype to include driver allocations. The post-holder will conduct research on the combined bus and driver scheduling, critically leading the development of models and algorithms for the task (with the research team). This is a complex problem that needs to account for, among other things, battery charging and driving time regulations. The successful applicant will work closely with the company, especially with their Head of Engineering, spending part of their time at Ember's office in central Edinburgh. Call for Submissions for the SOLA Dissertation Award The INFORMS Section on Location Analysis (SOLA) announces the biennial "SOLA Dissertation Award" given to the best dissertation in the area of Location Analysis. Dissertation eligibility is as follows: 1. written in English 2. completed between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 3. primary focus on substantive, theoretical or methodological issues in location analysis and modeling Completed dissertations from all disciplines, including management science, industrial engineering, transportation science, geography, and economics, will be considered. The Lifetime Achievement in Location Analysis (LALA) award is a triennial honor awarded to a person who has made significant lifetime contributions to location analysis research. Best regards, Francisco. ____________________________________________ Multi-period stochastic programming models and techniques for logistics distribution systems. In general problems addressed in the literature are more and more complex and integrate more and more information, thanks to the emergence of new technologies. However, studied problems still represent in most of the cases simplified versions of something that happens in the reality. For example, one aspect that is usually neglected in the literature is the aspect of stochasticity. More precisely, it is assumed that all data are given in advance, and there is nothing that could perturb the data. However, in the reality we have the opposite. There is a lot of uncertainty and systems and their data are subject to perturbations and changes. Hence, the aim of this PhD thesis is to further reduce this existing gap between the literature and practice. This would be achieved by proposing corresponding mathematical models and solution frameworks capable to deal with complex, stochastic problems usually encountered in practice. This thesis will focus on an integrated problem of network design and vehicle routing. The first problem to study will be a hub location routing problem. This problem is faced in many large companies like AMAZON, DHL, FeedEX etc. It consists in satisfying the customer demands within a given planning horizon using a distribution network that needs to be constructed and a given fleet of vehicles. The aim is to determine hub and spoke network through which the demands are transferred and to determine vehicles’ routes. Each demand is processed first at a distribution center, then it is transferred to one or more intermediated hubs, and finally to a customer. The transfers through the network are accomplished by the traditional vehicles (e.g., trucks) except for the last mile delivery where the delivery nowadays is accomplished also by (unmanned aerial vehicles) UAVs and electric vehicles. The second problem is a location arc routing problem. The aim of the problem is to simultaneously determine depots (i.e., locations from where vehicles departs and returns to), and design vehicles’ routes so that prespecified objective function is minimized. In addition, all demands located along edges need to be satisfied. In the frame of this thesis we are going to extend the studied problems by considering important aspects usually encountered in the practice: the aspect of stochasticity/ uncertainty that usually occurs in demands and travel times; and the aspect of multi-periodicity where the decisions need to be provided for a given planning horizon. Hence, the thesis will provide a thorough study on a robust network design and vehicle routing planning, with special emphasize on the stochasticity and multi-periodicity of problems under study. Modeling and studying theoretical properties will be the first step in the solution process of a problem at hand. Due to stochasticity/ uncertainty and/or multi-periodicity of the problems, the obtained models will be large scale mixed integer nonlinear problems. Therefore, the exact methods would be used to solve small test cases, in order to validate approach, while for large scale test cases we will be obliged to resort to heuristic solution approaches. In addition, in order to come up with strong upper/lower bounds, hybridization of exact and heuristic solution approaches will be considered as well. The thesis will be done in the framework of scientific collaboration between LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 - Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (UPHF), France and Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon, Portugal. The student will be co-supervised by Francisco Saldanha da Gama (University of Lisbon) and Raca Todosijevic (LAMIH, UPHF). Required competences: - Master degree in Operations Research / Mathematics / Computers Science or equivalent; - Strong knowledge in operations research including metaheuristics and mathematical programming; - Knowledge in stochastic optimization and/or optimization under uncertainty is a plus; - Excellent programming skills (e.g., C/C++, C#, Python, Java); - Knowledge of optimization software (CPLEX, GUROBI, GAMS, BARON etc) is a plus; - A high degree of autonomy and commitment to work; - Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; - Knowledge of French and Portuguese languages are not necessary. Duration: 3 years Salary: around 1450 euros net per month. The candidate will have possibility of teaching at UPHF, which is paid extra.
