Dear Locators, CUNEF Universidad, in collaboration with Sheffield University Management School, is pleased to invite you to the Workshop "Novel methods and techniques in location science and their applications in problems with or without a facility location focus", that will be celebrated in Madrid (Spain) on the 17th of July 2024. Traditional facility location models have been widely deployed to the solution of challenging location problems in diverse applied and theoretical settings. However, the application of facility location models has not been limited to location problems, and these techniques have been also applied to seemingly unconnected problems. For example, the p-median formulation has been used in clustering and data set partitioning problems; graph colouring problems; districting and hierarchical districting problems; as a grouping tool for team-orienteering problems; for genome rearrangement studies in genetics; and for drug response prediction in tumour cells; among others. The workshop aims at bringing together researchers interested in developing novel methods and applications of location models, together with those who are interested in exploring the application of those models beyond the traditional scope of facility location problems. The workshop will work as a melting pot for ideas and interactions between experts of different backgrounds and may open new and exciting areas of research for the location community. Researchers and practitioners are invited to present works in the form of oral communications. For participation, the submission of a short abstract is required (max. 400 words). No registration fees will be charged. The workshop has the financial support from the European Working Group in Locational Analysis (EWGLA). Therefore, participation of doctoral students is especially encouraged. Doctoral students are eligible for partial support of their travel expenses. Gilbert Laporte Student Paper Award by the Transportation and Logistics Special Interest Group of the Canadian Operational Research Society This prestigious award acknowledges exceptional scientific contributions to the theory, methodology, and practice of Operational Research (OR) in Transportation and Logistics by an undergraduate, graduate student, or a postdoctoral fellow. The award was named in honour of Professor Gilbert Laporte for his outstanding contributions to the development and applications of OR in Transportation and Logistics in Canada and beyond. Entry Requirements 1. The competition is for the best student paper submitted, published, or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal written on the broad topic of Transportation and Logistics. If the paper is published, the publication date must be in the year 2022 or after. 2. Supervisors and industry partners may appear as coauthors on the paper, but the first author must be the applicant. The applicant must have made substantial contributions to the paper. 3. Each applicant can apply with one paper only. 4. At the time the paper was written, the applicant should have been an undergraduate student, a graduate student, or a postdoctoral fellow at a Canadian university or a Canadian citizen studying in a university outside of Canada. 5. Papers selected as finalists must be presented in a special session at the annual CORS conference. Submission A cover letter (at most two pages) along with a pdf copy of the paper must be submitted by the application deadline on March 10, 2024, to the committee chair Sibel Alumur (sibel.alumur(a)uwaterloo.ca<mailto:sibel.alumur@uwaterloo.ca>) with the subject "GL Student Paper Award Application". The cover letter should at minimum discuss the motivation, the contribution and potential impact of the paper to the fields of transportation, logistics and operations research, and the role of the student in writing the paper. All co-authors must be CC'd in this email. The jury is composed of Sibel Alumur Alev, Elena Fernández, and Gilbert Laporte. Selection Criteria 1. Contribution of the paper to the field of transportation and logistics and operations research, 2. The scale of its impact on the transportation and logistics community and the public, 3. The originality of the problem and the methods, and 4. Style, clarity, and organization of the paper. With best wishes Said Said Salhi Emeritus Professor (University of Kent, UK) & Visiting Professor (Khalifa University, UAE) *** Call for Papers in Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS) TOPIC: Operational Research and Application for Sustainability and Sustainable Development The world is currently facing grand challenges, which encompass the range of complex global issues outlined by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identified by the UN in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, launched in 2015. To help address these challenges, which can be evident in different forms at all levels of the value chain, be it macro (industry, national, or global-levels), meso (firm-level) or micro-levels (individual-level), evidence-based inform decision-making becomes imperative. Operational research (OR), which has a long history spanning decades and was first applied in military efforts before Second World War, has long since spread to many disciplines such as engineering and management science as an analytical method for problem solving and decision making in organizations. The Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS) has commissioned a Special Issue with a singular focus on the development and application of operational research methods, models, and tools to address complex global issues outlined by the 17 SDGs. This is part of its 75th anniversary. Quantitative and qualitative OR methods, such as those discussed in the encyclopaedic article of methods, models and algorithms by Petropoulos et al. (2023), which can be used to model sustainability problems, are crucial when examining complex combinations of environmental, social and economic systems at the macro, meso, or micro levels to inform decision-making processes. Modelling these systems involves integrating knowledge and perspectives into conceptual and computational tools, such as OR that explicitly acknowledge how human decisions impact the sustainability agenda, including the protection of natural capital and the environment. The complexity of current grand challenges as exemplified by the SDG’s and decision support processes and systems needed to address these challenges implies that real transition towards sustainability and sustainable development, would require modeling tools, including that of OR. This call for papers seeks original research papers that expands the potential of OR in the broader context of sustainability and sustainable development. The use of methods, models and tools from modern operational research to address major themes of sustainability and sustainable development are a prerequisite for any analytical or empirical research paper to this special issue to enter the review process. If a paper passes initial screening, it will proceed to a normal review process, overseen by the Guest Editor of this Special Issue and the Editors-in-Chief of JORS. Once accepted, the paper will be expedited for publication. The LS2N Laboratory, IMT Atlantique and CRC Services, with the support of the National Research Agency (ANR), are pleased to announce the call for the *12th INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics Society Workshop (TSL 2024). * The workshop will be held in Nantes, France, from *September 25 to 27*. The main theme of the workshop is: *Optimizing Transportation and Logistics under Uncertainty * In the ever evolving world of transportation and logistics, there is a growing need to optimize operations under uncertainty. Decision makers are faced with variable transit times, volatile demand volumes, and fluctuating resource availability. This increases their need for algorithms that can deal with uncertainty. We invite submissions that enrich the scientific literature on optimizing transportation and logistics systems in uncertain environments. Here is the official call for papers: Facility location models involve the location of facilities that optimize an objective like minimizing the sum of distances, the maximum distance, maximizing the captured market share, and many others. There are numerous practical applications for such models, such as locating service facilities or facilities competing for customers. We are looking for suggestions of new models and applications, useful modifications of existing models, and better algorithms (heuristic or optimal) for their solution.
