Recent Advances on Optimization, July 24-26, 2013, Toulouse, France An international conference on optimization will be organized under the umbrella of a research programme supported by the RTRA STAE foundation in Toulouse from the 24th to 26th of July 2013. The conference will address topics in unconstrained and constrained optimization, with and without derivatives. It will be also the occasion to celebrate the many contributions made by Philippe L. Toint to the field. A half-day session related to the RTRA data assimilation project "ADTAO" will be part of this conference. Contributed talks and posters related to the topics of the conference are welcome, and will be added to the programme as far as schedule constraints permit. Call for Papers: Special Issue of the journal "Networks" on Robust Network Optimization Network parameters such as those defining the traffic matrix are generally uncertain. This uncertainty is typically the result of two factors: the intrinsic variability of the network parameters and the lack of information about these parameters. Consequently, it is important to take uncertainty into account when the network is designed or/and managed. Robust Optimization is one of the techniques that can help to incorporate uncertainty. We would like to receive original, high-quality research papers that address Robust Network Optimization. We are especially interested in submissions contributing to the following areas: - Robust routing under uncertainty. - Resource assignment under uncertainty (dimensioning, provisioning, wavelength assignment, etc.) - Survivability under uncertainty. - Network location under uncertainty. - Exact and approximation algorithms for robust network optimization problems. YoungOR 18 - Call for Papers *The Peter Chalk Centre, University of Exeter, 9 - 11 April 2013* Antuela Tako Are you interested in presenting at Young OR 18 or do you know someone who is? Young OR is a highly popular conference for academics and practitioners within the first ten years of their careers in O.R. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn about how O.R. and analytics are used in a wide range of applications. The conference programme will include plenaries, keynotes, workshops and parallel stream, as well as a full social programme, where participants will have the opportunity to meet and network with fellow academics and practitioners working in different sectors and areas of O.R. One key feature that makes the Young OR conference unique is that it provides participants a friendly and supportive environment to present to peers, hence facilitating the sharing of best practice. Presentations are welcome on a range of O.R. topics and areas of application including, but not limited to, the new and emerging area of analytics, more conventional hard O.R. and soft O.R. methods as well as new areas such as sustainability in O.R., O.R. in the third sector, and so on. Application-oriented presentations and case studies in areas such as health and defence are also welcome. The LGI2A, Laboratory of Computer Science and Control Systems of University of Artois (Bethune, North of France) is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in: *“Service Network Design in Supply Chain Systems”* for a 12 month contract to be filled as soon as possible. Successful candidate will perform research on models of capacitated multi-commodity flow, routing and location and develop mathematical models and efficient solution methods for real-life industrial applications (exact methods and heuristic approaches). The salary will be around 2,000 euro per month (only roughly). The research will be carried out in the group of “Systems Optimization” of LGI2A led by Prof. Gilles Goncalves. LGI2A (www.lgi2a.univ-artois.fr/) offers a strong scientific support, a friendly environment and collaborative international environment. Several international/EU industrial/research projects at LGI2A permit students and researchers to be in the middle of research collaboration and help them to extend their network to their counterparts at other universities, academic institutes and industries to develop their future career. Several meetings and plenary seminars will offer opportunity to students and researchers to communicate and benefit from the others latest research results. Bethune is a beautiful city located at the North of France (40 minutes North of Lille) in a very calm and quiet North-Western European region. It will take 1 hour going to Brussels, 2 hour from London and 70 minutes to Paris by TGV trains. Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or about to defend within a month) or equivalent in computer science, mathematics or a related area and should have a solid knowledge of mixed integer programming, excellent programming skills, experience in decomposition methods (primal and dual), metaheuristics, and algorithms. Other skills such as knowledge in probability theory and stochastic programming are beneficial. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are mandatory. Knowledge of French is not required, but successful candidates will be encouraged to learn some basics. Often there has been free French course offered to researchers and their family members by the University of Lille du Nord. The PhD position will be co-funded by the University of Artois, French Ministry of Science and/or the Nord-Pas de Calais region (France) under the title of: “*Service Network Design in Supply Chain Systems”* to be supervised by Prof. Gilles Goncalves and Assoc. Prof. Shahin Gelareh at LGI2A. The PhD is expected to start on October 2013. Dear colleagues please see announcement below The 3rd Winter School on Network Optimization (http://NetOpt2013.fc.ul.pt) will take place at the Hotel Sana, Estoril, from the 14th to the 18th of January, 2013. Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to get together and attend high level courses in the field of Network Optimization. Non-PhD students are welcome to attend the school, but the number of participants is limited and priority will be given to PhD students. Since the first edition in 2009, the school has been part of the activities of the Centro de Investigação Operacional, University of Lisbon as well as of the European Network Optimization Group (ENOG). The event is also endorsed by the EURO – the Association of European Societies – and APDIO – the Portuguese OR society. *** Sorry for cross-postings *** A postdoctoral research position is available in the group "Graphs and Mathematical Optimization" (GMO) of the Computer Science Department of Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), in Belgium. The position is part of the Inter-university Attraction Pole «COMEX: Combinatorial Optimization: Metaheuristics and Exact methods», due to start in October 2012. The project is coordinated by Bernard Fortz (ULB) and involves 8 Belgian teams and 2 international partners working in the field of combinatorial optimization. The main research directions followed in the project are: - Study and modeling of combinatorial optimization problems; - Advancements in algorithmic techniques; - Implementation of solution methods for large-scale, practically relevant problems. The focus in the GMO group will be on the development of exact methods for applications in telecommunications network design, bio-informatics and pricing problems. The main tasks of the postdoc, in addition to perform research linked with the project objectives, will be to coordinate the interactions between the different teams and help supervising the PhD students working on the project in the GMO group. The position is available for a 2-year period, renewable once. The 3rd Winter School on Network Optimization (http://NetOpt2013.fc.ul.pt) will take place at the Hotel Sana, Estoril, from the 14th to the 18th of January, 2013. Its main objective is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to get together and attend high level courses in the field of Network Optimization. Non-PhD students are welcome to attend the school, but the number of participants is limited and priority will be given to PhD students. Since the first edition in 2009, the school has been part of the activities of the Centro de Investigação Operacional, University of Lisbon as well as of the European Network Optimization Group (ENOG). ================================================= SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: 4th AIMMS/MOPTA International Optimization Modeling Competition (http://coral.ie.lehigh.edu/~mopta/competition) ================================================= Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that we announce the fourth AIMMS/MOPTA Optimization Modeling Competition. The competition is jointly organized by the conference organizers of MOPTA 2012 (http://coral.ie.lehigh.edu/~mopta/) and Paragon Decision Technology (http://www.aimms.com). Finalists are expected to attend and present their results at the MOPTA 2012 Conference to be held July 30-August 1, 2012 at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA. Teams of at most three students can participate. The team leader has to be a graduate student, though the other members of the team can be advanced undergraduate students. Each member of the team must be registered as a full-time student at a recognized educational institution during the Spring term of the 2011-2012 academic year. Students with a background in optimization, regardless of their actual field of study, are eligible. Collaboration between students from different departments is strongly encouraged. Each team must declare a team advisor with which the team may consult about the problem and their solution. It is the team advisor’s responsibility to ensure that the students have appropriate knowledge for the competition. The team advisor should not be involved as a participant in the solution process. As the conference is international, so is the competition. Teams from all over the world can participate, as long as at least one team member can come to the conference, should the team make it to the final round. The official language of the competition is English. The competition is jointly organized by the conference organizers of MOPTA and Paragon Decision Technology (http://www.aimms.com). Finalists are expected to attend and present their results at the 2012 MOPTA Conference to be held July 30-August 1, 2012 at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA. Teams of at most three students can participate. The team leader has to be a graduate student, though the other members of the team can be advanced undergraduate students. Each member of the team must be registered as a full-time student at a recognized educational institution during the Spring term of the 2011-2012 academic year. Students with a background in optimization, regardless of their actual field of study, are eligible. Collaboration between students from different departments is strongly encouraged. Each team must declare a team advisor with which the team may consult about the problem and their solution. It is the team advisor’s responsibility to ensure that the students have appropriate knowledge for the competition. The team advisor should not be involved as a participant in the solution process. As the conference is international, so is the competition. Teams from all over the world can participate, as long as at least one team member can come to the conference, should the team make it to the final round. PhD students from all European Universities studying Operational Research, Management Science or a related field are kindly invited to submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. The Eleventh INFORMS Telecommunications Conference will be held March 15-17, 2012 at the Renaissance Boca Raton, Boca Raton, FL. In the tradition of the previous “Boca” conferences, the Eleventh Conference will focus on the theory and application of operations research and management science to problems in telecommunications, with particular emphasis on new and emerging technologies. Topics for the Conference include, but are not limited to: Telecommunications modeling, policy, and technology, network design, algorithms, optimization, network economics and techno-economics, sensor networks, wireless and broadband networks, mobile computing, semantic networks, network survivability and reliability, information security and privacy, pricing, quality of service, Internet and multimedia, data mining applications in telecommunications networks. Guidelines for submission: Three kinds of submissions are invited: proposals for (i) an organized session with multiple presentations, (ii) a single presentation, and (iii) a tutorial presentation. An extended abstract in PDF is required for each talk (whether it is a single presentation or part of an organized session). Proposals for organized sessions and tutorials can be submitted by email directly to one of the program co-chairs (see below) for a quick decision. All single presentation abstracts must be submitted via the online submission system (available soon at http://www.informs.org/Community/Telecom). Conference volume: Conference participants will be eligible to submit papers based on their presentations for a special issue of Netnomics featuring select papers from the conference. A postdoctoral position is available in the area of Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming in Telecom SudParis (30km south of paris) and Supelec (south of paris). The position is open to candidates of any nationality and the selection will be based on the candidates research records and their potential to make a significant contribution in the context of the postdoc. Applicants, should hold a Ph.D. in optimization or operations research and have a background in integer programming and/or nonlinear programming.
