Dear Colleagues, The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering & Applied Science at Lehigh University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE). We seek a high-profile, accomplished researcher who is a dynamic leader with a vision to build upon the continued growth and success of the Department and to expand its interdisciplinary efforts within Lehigh. The Department currently has 14 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and three Professors of Practice. Our undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. programs are vibrant and growing, with current enrollments of approximately 180 undergraduate, 190 Masters, and 40 Ph.D. students. ISE faculty members maintain outstanding international reputations in a variety of areas, including mathematical optimization, analytics, high performance computing, data science, manufacturing systems, financial optimization, healthcare systems, logistics, and supply chain analysis. Research expenditures currently exceed $3 million. ISE has extensive interdisciplinary ties with other academic departments at Lehigh. The efficient and effective management of these heterogeneous network architectures requires new optimization approaches, including central and distributed optimization schemes, or a combination thereof, where optimization can have very different objectives, including spectral efﬁciency, latency, reliability, energy efﬁciency meeting constraints on the available spectrum, backhaul network capacity, and deployment or operational costs. Supervisor Ivan Contreras <http://users.encs.concordia.ca/%7Eicontrer/web/Publications.html> and Gilbert Laporte <http://chairedistributique.hec.ca/en/> Program description Urban transportation concerns the movement of both freight and people in urban areas and involves different stakeholders. The considerable urban population growth over the last decades, together with the rise of e-commerce, and the increased attention to sustainability poses important challenges for the planning of urban transportation systems, particularly in the freight transport sector. The main goal of this research proposal is to study strategic optimization models in urban freight transportation that integrate facility location, capacity planning, fleet composition, and vehicle routing decisions. In particular, it will focus on the design of two-level urban freight transportation networks involving urban consolidation centers and cross-dock satellites. Mathematical models will be developed to analyze the impact of location, capacity selection, link activation, and routing decisions on pollution when these are taken into account in the design of urban freight transportation networks. Approximate and exact solution algorithms will also be developed to efficiently solve these problems. Academic qualifications required * Phd in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Transportation, or related fields with experience in mathematical modeling and in the development of decomposition methods for large-scale optimization. * Advanced knowledge in commercial optimization solvers (CPLEX or GUROBI) and programming skills in C/C++ or Java are required. * Knowledge in urban transportation planning is desirable. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania May 20-23, 2017. The conference is a forum for exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the industrial and systems engineering research and practitioner communities. The 2017 IISE Annual Conference and Expo will be one conference. There are no longer separate ISERC and Applied Solutions sessions. *********************************************************** Call for Papers - Annals of Operations Research Special Issue Recent Advances in Decomposition Methods for Hard Optimization Problems *********************************************************** Motivation Divide and conquer, from Latin divide et impera, is one of the key techniques for tackling combinatorial optimization problems. It relies on the idea of decomposing complex problems into a sequence of subproblems that are then easier to handle. Decomposition techniques (such as Dantzig-Wolfe, Lagrangian, or Benders decomposition) are extremely effective in a wide range of applications, including cutting & packing, production & scheduling, routing & logistics, telecommunications, transportation and many others. Moreover, decomposition techniques are playing an important role in many different fields of mixed-integer linear and non-linear optimization, multi objective optimization, optimization under uncertainty, bilevel optimization, etc. Despite the tremendous amount of research on these topics, the mathematical optimization community is constantly faced with new challenges coming from theoretical aspects and real world applications that require the development of new advanced tools. This special issue will be a point of reference for researchers and practitioners that want to learn more about the recent advances in decomposition techniques for hard combinatorial optimization problems. We solicit original and high-quality papers presenting the latest improvements in the field. Topics The purpose of this issue is to provide a view on state of the art decomposition methods in the field of mathematical optimization. We will consider high-quality manuscripts addressing the development of new theoretical insights, algorithmic approaches and computational studies in the context of exact and heuristic methods based on decomposition techniques. Methods include optimization, heuristics, meta-heuristics and matheuristics, simulation, agent technologies, and descriptive methods. Recent advances incorporating big data and cloud computing are especially welcome. Minitrack description: Information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) are prerequisites and enablers for successful supply chain management (SCM). With related advances, the logistics and SCM field is developing very dynamically. Business-to-business transactions are made via the Internet and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems support managing the transactional information within the enterprise. Cooperation and coordination is only possible based on IT and IS. While IT and IS are vital components in supply chains, their successful management rests on intelligent and coordinated decision making throughout the logistics network. Intelligent decision support and decision analytics using advanced decision technologies and analytics methodology are of utmost importance in logistics and SCM. Sensor networks, social network activities, RFID deployment, internet search histories and retail transactions are just a few examples of sources to provide data to support efficient decision analytics. Big data issues are well recognized and offer opportunities long waited for but also provide challenges in handling and decision analytics. Cloud computing allows also small and medium sized enterprises to access resources to support analytics functions. Business intelligence and data mining can be used to store and analyze logistics, product, inventory, and sales information. Simulation and optimization, which can be found in advanced planning and scheduling systems, can be employed for, e.g., inventory, production, procurement, and distribution planning. Intelligent agents can, e.g., communicate with different partners in the supply chain, assist in collecting information, share product information, negotiate prices, and distribute alerts throughout the logistics networks. The design and implementation of intelligent decision analytics tools to support human agents in computational logistics and SCM is a very active field in research, consulting and software development. Many such technologies or systems are continuously being developed, implemented and used in real-world scenarios. We do, therefore, believe that this minitrack will be recognized by both the scientific community and practitioners developing or using logistics and SCM solutions. We aim at organizing a minitrack consisting of two sessions depending on the number of high quality submissions. We seek papers dealing with decision analytics, business intelligence, big data, cloud computing and decision technologies which contribute to intelligent decision support in the whole field of logistics and in particular in all categories of SCM. This includes but is not restricted to simulation, optimization, heuristics, metaheuristics, agent technologies, decision analytics, descriptive models, and data mining. We are especially interested in real-world applications and in information systems and software solutions which assist in solving decision problems. This is extended towards, e.g., computational logistics, advanced planning systems and the intelligent use of ERP systems.
