This decision was made jointly by the organizing committee and the VeRoLog Board. It was decided that VeRoLog will not hold a conference in 2024. We hope to hold the VeRoLog conference in Tel Aviv in the future. As a consequence, the VeRoLog doctoral dissertation prize will not be awarded this year as planned, but eligible candidates will have the chance to apply for the prize at the next VeRoLog conference. Dear Colleague, It is my pleasure to invite you to participate at ISCO2024, https://eventos.ull.es/isco-2024 It is the coming edition of a series of meetings known as "International Symposium on Combinatorial Optimization" (ISCO). Previous editions were in Tunisia (2010), Athens (2012), Lisbon (2014), Vietri (2016), Marrakesh (2018), Montreal (2020) and Paris (2022). Each edition consists of a 3-day international conference on Combinatorial Optimization preceded by a 2-day doctoral school. The coming 3-day conference will run from *22 to 24 May 2024*, preceded by a 2-day school on 20 and 21 May 2024. The venue will be the School of Mathematics at University of La Laguna (in La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). The aim of the ISCO2024 organizers is to create the best possible atmosphere in Tenerife to facilitate interaction between participants, selecting innovative submissions on all areas of Combinatorial Optimization to create an interesting scientific program, enriched with plenary talks by top motivational invited speakers, and complemented with attractive social activities. Feel free to distribute this invitation to everybody that could be interested in Combinatorial Optimization. Scientific presentations in the conference must follow a submission process, where we accept two types of proposals. "Regular papers" (up to 12 pages, deadline is 31 December 2023) and "Extended abstracts" (up to 3 pages, deadline is 15 February 2024). Each submission will be evaluated by the Program Committee and will be answered (accepted or rejected) by 15 March 2024. An author of each accepted submission must be registered at ISCO2024 before 31 March 2024. Accepted Regular Papers with a registered author will be published in a pre-conference proceeding (*LNCS* by Springer). The International Transactions in Operational Research (ITOR), the flagship journal published by the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), will publish a special issue dedicated to "Concepts for Sustainable and Responsive Transportation and Logistics", at the occasion of the 23rd Triennial Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS 2023) to be held in Santiago, Chile from July 10 to 14th. Although we strongly encourage the submission of papers presented at the special sessions devoted to this subject at the IFORS 2023 conference, this Call for Papers is open to the entire community of academics and practitioners. Scope Transport and logistics enable the movement of goods, trade, and social mobility. They are important pillars of economic growth and social development. Transport is also a major contributor - with over 15% - to global greenhouse gas emissions and has been recently subject to multiple shocks related to more extreme weather conditions, geopolitical and technological changes. Therefore, transport and logistics are very much in the focus of decision-makers of all levels, who are in search of sustainable and responsive solutions. At the macro- and mesoscopic level, policy decision-makers are concerned with developing infrastructure, incentivizing alternative energy sources, and creating market conditions, which promote decarbonization in transport and help to reduce the effects of climate change. The social dimension remains very high in the political agenda and includes sustainable city transportation concepts, safeguarding mobility services in increasingly scarcely populated rural areas as well as enabling access to affordable transportation for developing countries. New technologies provide chances, but also disrupt the whole social systems and markets - think, for instance, about the impact of digital ridesharing platforms on the market of taxi services. With the recent experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, devastating earthquakes, and hurricanes, including the six-day blockage of the Suez Canal with a container ship caused by hush weather conditions, the awareness and high priority for resilient and responsive transportation and logistics systems dominate the agenda. At the company level - that of transportation and logistics companies, operators of transport gateways, hubs, and warehouses, - the rethinking of business processes is a matter of survival in the highly competitive market. Companies are looking for efficient and effective ways to exploit new technologies - from sensors and data analytics to autonomously driven vehicles - in order to reach sustainability goals and adapt to changing market conditions while keeping costs low. Logistics is also an essential, though mostly overseen part, of other industrial sectors. For instance, internal logistics accounts for 30-80% of the total manufacturing cost. Digitization and new autonomous technologies have a potential to a game changer that enables to restructure the production processes in a more agile and energy-efficient way. This special issue aims to provide a forum for the latest developments in Operations Research towards concepts for sustainable and responsive transportation and logistics. It aims to condense essential theoretical and empirical findings and insights to support comprehensive reactive and proactive decision making at all levels. Topics of this special issue should address the aspects of sustainability and/or responsiveness in transportation and logistics and may include, but not be limited to, the use of analytical and optimization approaches as well as of empirical research to address significant theoretical and practical issues in the following areas: * Design of sustainable and resilient transportation- and logistics- related infrastructure * Mechanism design for markets of mobility and transportation-related services * Public transportation * City logistics * Mobility concepts for rural areas * Sustainable and/or responsive concepts for freight transportation, including decarbonization * Intermodal and synchromodal transportation * Collaboration in transport * Sustainable and/or resilient operations of transportation hubs and gateways, such as ports, rail terminals, crossdocks, etc. * Sharing economy for mobility services, including ride sharing * People and freight-integrated transportation and logistics * Drone-aided routing and transport * Internal manufacturing logistics * Dynamic, responsive (adjustable) planning approaches to transportation and logistics * Robust and resilient planning approaches to transportation and logistics We are particularly interested in receiving strong, innovative, and insightful studies that focus on both theoretical concepts and practical applications. These studies should make a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge. Dear ENOG members Some of you may have seen a call for papers for a new and fair open access journal entitled Open Journal of Mathematical Optimization (OJMO <https://ojmo.centre-mersenne.org/>). OJMO is a journal owned by academics and for academics. Its only purpose is to offer our fellow mathematical optimizers a high-quality forum where papers are published in open access free of charge. Hence, the results published in that journal are freely available to anybody. Sarah Following the EURO 2018 Women in Science and EURO 2019 Women in OR sessions, interested members of the OR community are working with the EURO Executive Committee on an initiative to create the EURO WISDOM Forum (Women In Society: Doing Operational Research and Management Science). This initiative restates the need for gender main-streaming and affirms that OR/MS can offer exciting opportunities for all women if they have equal access to resources and adequate training. Gender main-streaming aims to integrate a gender dimension into existing institutions and practices in order to achieve meaningful gender equality. WISDOM is a forum to support, empower, and encourage the participation of all genders in OR/MS within EURO. In particular, it aims to promote inclusivity by the following actions: 1. Advise/make recommendations/highlight best practices to the EURO executive on issues facing women in OR. Such guidelines can be disseminated to EURO member societies and Working Groups. Positive progress, outcomes and activities of member societies can serve as a template for other member societies; 2. Promote championing, networking and mentoring, particularly of women at the early stages of their career in OR; 3. Promote a conversation around how OR can be utilised to help create a diverse and inclusive future. In January 2020, all EURO member societies were invited to nominate one or two members to participate in establishing the EURO WISDOM Forum. At the moment, the WISDOM Forum organising committee (OC) includes 21 members from 10 European OR societies including two EURO representatives, the EURO Vice Presidents Julia Bennell and Claudia Archetti. The chair of the WISDOM OC is Paula Carroll and the Secretary is Annunziata Esposito Amideo, both from the University College Dublin, Ireland. The WISDOM Forum will operate through three subcommittees focusing on Research, Events and Public Relations (PR). Dear colleagues, Due to the rapidly evolving situation related to the Corona virus (COVID-19) epidemic, the organization committee of the INFORMS TNA Conference 2020, in agreement with the steering committee of the INFORMS Telecommunications and Network Analytics Section, has decided to postpone the meeting to a later date. Therefore, we regret to inform you that the conference will no longer take place on the previously scheduled dates (31 March - 2 April, 2020). Best regards, Francisco. ____________________________________________ Multi-period stochastic programming models and techniques for logistics distribution systems. In general problems addressed in the literature are more and more complex and integrate more and more information, thanks to the emergence of new technologies. However, studied problems still represent in most of the cases simplified versions of something that happens in the reality. For example, one aspect that is usually neglected in the literature is the aspect of stochasticity. More precisely, it is assumed that all data are given in advance, and there is nothing that could perturb the data. However, in the reality we have the opposite. There is a lot of uncertainty and systems and their data are subject to perturbations and changes. Hence, the aim of this PhD thesis is to further reduce this existing gap between the literature and practice. This would be achieved by proposing corresponding mathematical models and solution frameworks capable to deal with complex, stochastic problems usually encountered in practice. This thesis will focus on an integrated problem of network design and vehicle routing. The first problem to study will be a hub location routing problem. This problem is faced in many large companies like AMAZON, DHL, FeedEX etc. It consists in satisfying the customer demands within a given planning horizon using a distribution network that needs to be constructed and a given fleet of vehicles. The aim is to determine hub and spoke network through which the demands are transferred and to determine vehicles’ routes. Each demand is processed first at a distribution center, then it is transferred to one or more intermediated hubs, and finally to a customer. The transfers through the network are accomplished by the traditional vehicles (e.g., trucks) except for the last mile delivery where the delivery nowadays is accomplished also by (unmanned aerial vehicles) UAVs and electric vehicles. The second problem is a location arc routing problem. The aim of the problem is to simultaneously determine depots (i.e., locations from where vehicles departs and returns to), and design vehicles’ routes so that prespecified objective function is minimized. In addition, all demands located along edges need to be satisfied. In the frame of this thesis we are going to extend the studied problems by considering important aspects usually encountered in the practice: the aspect of stochasticity/ uncertainty that usually occurs in demands and travel times; and the aspect of multi-periodicity where the decisions need to be provided for a given planning horizon. Hence, the thesis will provide a thorough study on a robust network design and vehicle routing planning, with special emphasize on the stochasticity and multi-periodicity of problems under study. Modeling and studying theoretical properties will be the first step in the solution process of a problem at hand. Due to stochasticity/ uncertainty and/or multi-periodicity of the problems, the obtained models will be large scale mixed integer nonlinear problems. Therefore, the exact methods would be used to solve small test cases, in order to validate approach, while for large scale test cases we will be obliged to resort to heuristic solution approaches. In addition, in order to come up with strong upper/lower bounds, hybridization of exact and heuristic solution approaches will be considered as well. The thesis will be done in the framework of scientific collaboration between LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 - Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (UPHF), France and Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon, Portugal. The student will be co-supervised by Francisco Saldanha da Gama (University of Lisbon) and Raca Todosijevic (LAMIH, UPHF). Required competences: - Master degree in Operations Research / Mathematics / Computers Science or equivalent; - Strong knowledge in operations research including metaheuristics and mathematical programming; - Knowledge in stochastic optimization and/or optimization under uncertainty is a plus; - Excellent programming skills (e.g., C/C++, C#, Python, Java); - Knowledge of optimization software (CPLEX, GUROBI, GAMS, BARON etc) is a plus; - A high degree of autonomy and commitment to work; - Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; - Knowledge of French and Portuguese languages are not necessary. Duration: 3 years Salary: around 1450 euros net per month. The candidate will have possibility of teaching at UPHF, which is paid extra. *Second Announcement and Call for Papers - Registration is now open* Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the INFORMS Telecommunications and Network Analytics Conference (TNAC), which will take place at Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), on March 29 - April 1, 2020 in Berlin, Germany (http://informs_tnac2020.zib.de/). INFORMS TNAC 2020 (previously INFORMS Telecommunications Conference) is the 15th of bi-annual conferences held by the INFORMS Telecommunications and Network Analytics Section. The conference is going to be focused on the theory and application of operations research and management science to problems in telecommunications and network analytics, with particular emphasis on new and emerging technologies. Additionally, the conference is going to provide a platform for academics and industry experts working in telecommunications and network analytics to exchange ideas and initiate new collaborations, as in previous conferences. Submissions from the interested researchers are welcome for an organized session with 3-4 presentations, a tutorial session or a single presentation. The topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Telecommunications modeling, policy and technology; * Data mining and big data applications in telecommunications; * Machine learning and artificial intelligence in network analytics; * Network economics; * Network design; * Traffic routing; * Network optimization; * Network algorithms and metaheuristics; * Sensor networks; * Wireless and broadband networks; * Vehicle and mobile computing; * Cloud computing and fog computing; * Semantic networks; * Network survivability and reliability; * Information security and privacy; * Game theory applications; * Internet and multimedia; * Quality of service. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received support from EURO for other PhD schools. PhD students need to apply to be admitted to the EURO PhD School. The candidates will be required to have basic knowledge of Mathematical Optimization, Operations Research or Statistical Data Analysis. For the application the following documents are needed: * Curriculum Vitae from the applicant * A letter of motivation from the applicant to attend EURO PhD School * Recommendation letter from the PhD supervisor Those applicants admitted to the EURO PhD School will be automatically considered for a scholarship to partially cover the fees of the EURO PhD School. The applications will be reviewed by the scientific committee. The committee will consider (amongst other criteria): the excellence of the applicants, the area they are working in, and the benefit to the PhD student of attending the EURO PhD School. The applicants will be notified by February 1, 2020. EURO PhD School on Sustainable Supply Chains 19-23 July 2020, Lisbon, Portugal https://epsinssc.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/ Deadline for Application: January 20, 2020 There are 30 available seats for the 2020 Sustainable Supply Chains Summer School. Due to the limited capacity there is an application processes for those that want to participate. To apply to the EURO PhD School on Sustainable Supply Chains the candidates should be from a EURO member society country, or studying in a EURO member society country. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received support from EURO for other PhD schools.
