Second CFP: Special Issue on Fair Optimization and Networks

Apologies for possible crossposting. Dear Colleagues, We are editing a Special Issue on Fair Optimization and Networks: Models, Algorithms and Applications to be published by Journal of Applied Mathematics (an Open Access journal JCR indexed). http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jam/si/419729/cfp/ The issue of fairness is widely recognized in location and allocation analysis of public services. The need of fair optimization arrives also in more general problems of resource allocation such as in various network systems. Fair network optimization issues are in focus of diverse applications and problems arising in communication networks. These issues are closely related to situations where it is desirable to achieve an equitable allocation of certain resources, shared by competing demands. Fairness, more specifically, lexicographic maximin optimization, Max-Min Fairness and Proportional Fairness, are widely studied in the communication network literature, especially related to bandwidth allocation, and rate adaptation and congestion control in TCP networks. Still, this concept continues to be widely applicable in different settings in network optimization and more specifically in multi-commodity flow networks related applications. The special issue strives to serve as a platform for researchers and practitioners to present advances in the field. We invite authors to submit original research articles that propose new models, algorithms and applications of fair network optimization. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Fairness in communication network design including traffic routing, resource allocation, and survivability issues - Fair optimization of transportation networks - Network dimensioning, models and computational methods - Fair optimization of logistic networks - Fairness in sensor networks - Fair allocation of resources, tasks, or costs - Fair scheduling The deadline for submissions is February 7, 2014. INFORMS Telecommunications 2014 (www.informstelecom2014.fc.ul.pt) - 2nd announcement The 12th INFORMS Telecommunications Conference will be held March 2 - 4, 2014 in Campo Grande, Lisboa, Portugal. In the tradition of the previous conferences, the 12th Conference will focus on the theory and application of operations research and management science to problems in telecommunications, with particular emphasis on new and emerging technologies. The conference is organized by the INFORMS Technical Section on Telecommunications. ISCO 2014 and Spring School in Stochastic Programming (2nd announcement) The 3rd International Symposium in Combinatorial Optimization (ISCO 2014) will take place in Lisbon, March 5-7 2014, in Campo Grande, Lisboa, Portugal. ISCO is a biannual symposium whose aim is to gather researchers from combinatorial optimization and other related fields of operations research. Conference Chairs: Luis Gouveia (Univ of Lisbon-CIO) and Ridha Mahjoub (University Paris-Dauphine) Plenary Speakers: Matteo Fischetti (Univ. of Padova), Martin Grotschel (ZIB-Berlin) and Adam Letchford (University of Lancaster) Abstract submission deadline: December 15, 2013 Accepted regular papers (with up to 12 pages) will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series in a post-conference proceedings volume. The authors will have to prepare their camera-ready version two weeks after the end of ISCO 2014. Last Call for Abstracts EURO mini-Conference on Optimization in the Natural Sciences (EURO mini 2014) ============================================================ Dear Colleagues, the organizers of the EURO mini-Conference on Optimization in the Natural Sciences (EURO mini 2014) have a pleasure to invite you to take part in this conference to be held in Aveiro, Portugal on 5-9 February, 2014, http://minieuro2014.web.ua.pt/.[1] The conference aims at discussing the latest research in optimization and its applications to the Natural Sciences. Aveiro is located about 80km from the Porto Airport and 250km from Lisbon Airport. However is quite easy and quick to travel from any of these cities to Aveiro: 2h30 from Lisbon and 40min from Porto. Aveiro is situated on the estuary of Vouga river and is surrounded by a system of marshlands that run 50km parallel to the sea. The town has famous channels where typical boats (moliceiro) sail, bridges and pastel-coloured houses that are somewhat reminiscent of Amsterdam or Venice. A special attention deserve: Aveiro Cathedral (15th-18th centuries) and its gothic cross; Misericórdia Church; São Bartolomeu and Senhor das Barrocas chapels; 18th-century churches of Santo António, Nossa Senhora da Apresentação and São Gonçalo; the Regional Museum (housed in the ancient Convento de Jesus); the city hall and beautiful building in the New Art style; the train station and the beautiful tiles of the old Fonte Nova factory (1916) where the Cultural and Congress Center is situated now; the Infante D. Pedro park; the Barra and Costa Nova beaches (the last one is also known for its typical beach houses); Humberto Delgado square; Carcavelos bridge and S. Roque channel. Dear Colleagues, The Telecommunications Department of SUPELEC currently has two openings at the Assistant Professor level in the field of communications networks. Reference TEL 1: In this position, research is related to Queuing analysis and system-level design of wireless networks, and Performance evaluation of communication networks. Therefore, a strong background in some of the following topics is desired: Queuing theory, Stochastic networks, and Traffic modeling. Reference TEL 2: In this position, research is related to Content Delivery Networks (CDN), Proactive optimization of networks harnessing recent developments in context-awareness and social networks, and/or Dynamics of information spread on networks. The candidate should have a strong background in one (or some) of the following topics: Statistical learning, Random graphs, Big Data Analysis, Combinatorial optimization, and Stochastic networks. For both positions, the candidates must have a Ph.D. and a strong research record. They must also be committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in telecommunications, networks, and related fields.
